During snowy months (mid-December through early-May), the Chittenden Brook Road will be closed (road closure is subject to weather conditions, and may occur earlier than Dec. 15), and access to the hut is limited to human-powered modes of travel only. Parking will be located at the start of Chittenden Brook Road, where the gate will be closed and the access road unplowed. It is from here where you will begin your ski or snowshoe toward the hut. The approach from the gate to the hut is approximately 2.2 miles.

During months when the Chittenden Brook Road (a US Forest Service Road) is open (early/mid-May – early/mid-December), guests may drive directly to the hut (two cars max at hut, additional parking located in lot on southern end of campground). Alternatively, guests may hike in via the Chittenden Brook Trail, which can be accessed from Chittenden Brook Road or from the Long Trail (hut is located approx 1.8 miles from intersection of Long Trail).

There are a number of activities right outside the door of the Chittenden Brook Hut! During winter months, guests will experience complete backcountry solitude in the hut because the small and remote summer campground in which it resides will be unoccupied. Explore the surrounding trail network on your backcountry skis or snowshoes, or go on a longer excursion up Chittenden Brook Trail to connect to the Long Trail

The hut is approximately 2.5 miles (via Chittenden Brook Trail and Long Trail north) from the beautiful backcountry zones in Brandon Gap. Imagine earning your turns on a deep powder day and returning back to a nice warm hut with your friends and family!

Summer hiking opportunities surround you at the Chittenden Brook Hut. With easy vehicle access for you and your family, it’s the perfect place to escape the dogs days of summer. Check out this interactive map on Trail Finder for a glimpse of what awaits you in this pristine mountain setting.

We will be updating this page with additional maps and resources in the near future.

Check-in/Out Times: Check-in anytime after 2:00 PM on your arrival date. Check-out no later than 12:00 PM on your departure date.

Hut Security Code: You will receive a separate email with the hut’s access code once the building’s installation is finished.

Heat: The hut is heated with a propane stove. Please reference the operating instructions in hut.

Lights: The hut has a small solar system, though snowy months may not provide enough energy to power the system. Please bring a headlamp or battery-powered lantern as backup. No gas-powered lanterns.

Cooking: For your convenience, the hut is outfitted with a propane cookstove. There is no need to bring your own cooking device. Pots, pans, utensils, and other dishware for up to 10 people are also provided.

Trash: During summer months and when access road is open, guests may utilize the trash receptacle (dumpster) at the entrance to the campground loop. There will be no trash bags in the hut for guests to use. Guests are expected to leave no trace in the hut and pack out all food and trash or dispose of it in the receptacle (when road is open). When the road is closed and access is via human-powered modes of travel only, guests must pack out all trash with them, as there will be no dumpster or receptacles at the campground. Leave the cabin nicer than when you found it!

Sleeping: The hut sleeps 10 guests, and there are mattresses provided on each bunk. There is no need to bring a camping pad, though you should bring your sleeping bag or blanket(s). There are no linens provided.

Water: There is no potable water supply. However, guests may filter/treat water from the Chittenden Brook when it is not frozen. When brook is frozen, please use snowmelt and reference instructions inside the hut.

Toilet: Guests may use the two vaulted privies available at the campground.

Phone: There is no phone on site, and cell coverage is spotty to non-existent.

Cancellations: Reservations canceled 15 days or more in advance will receive a 50% refund. Reservations canceled 14 days or less in advance are non-refundable.

Pets: We love animals. We really do. However, pets aren’t allowed inside the Chittenden Brook Hut out of respect for those with pet allergies. After all, no one can control what causes their allergies, but we can usually find friends/family/neighbors to watch our pets. If you must bring your pet, they are of course permitted on the campground and surrounding trails, though they should be on a leash or under voice command at all times, and they may not join you in the hut. Always clean up after your animals. Be sure your dog is safe during hunting season by providing a blaze orange bandana or vest. Unless your dog can tolerate extremely cold temperatures, we suggest leaving your pet at home during winter months, as they are not permitted to enter the hut at any time.

*Failure to comply with these policies may result in additional charges to your reservation.
