Development Director

About Us

Vermont Huts & Trails (VHT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to foster a deeper appreciation for our natural environment and strengthen Vermont’s communities by providing enriching and immersive outdoor experiences for all. We work to increase access to outdoor recreation and actively support rural economies throughout Vermont. To do that, we’re creating the country’s most innovative statewide, hut-supported trail network, intentionally routed into local communities and linking existing networks.

The Position

The Development Director (DD) is a full time (32 hours/week) position with benefits.

We are seeking a dynamic individual who is a self-starter, can wear many hats, and enjoys the freedom to think creatively. The DD will work closely with the Executive Director (ED), Marketing Manager, and Development Assistant to develop and execute successful organizational fundraising efforts, including the creation of new relationships with private donors and foundations, growing our existing member base, and executing targeted fundraising campaigns. The DD should be able to clearly articulate the value of supporting the VHT mission, with a keen eye for identifying individuals and entities whose priorities align with ours.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Grow VHT’s donor base by fostering existing relationships and cultivating prospective donors utilizing a variety of tools including wealth screening software
  • Develop and execute VHT’s annual fundraising goals and strategies in effort to grow revenue year-over-year to meet overhead and capital budgetary needs
  • Manage donor database in Salesforce; process and track donations and gift acknowledgements in coordination with Development Assistant
  • Develop and execute targeted fundraising campaigns and events
  • Identify new grant opportunities and submit applications with support from appropriate staff
  • Identify and secure new corporate sponsorships with support from the ED, BOD, and Marketing Manager
  • Keep a variety of stakeholders apprised of VHT’s successes and needs via quarterly and annual reports along with other methods of communication
  • Liaise with Board of Directors, including quarterly reports and ongoing participation in fundraising campaigns and events

 

Location

This is a Vermont-based hybrid position that requires reliable, high-speed internet for any remote work. Staff meet in person twice monthly at our Waterbury office but can work on site whenever they choose. Additional in-person attendance is expected throughout the year for fundraising events, donor and foundation meetings, and other organizational activities.

 

Desired Experience

While not critical, we’d love it if you had the following experience:

  • Experience in nonprofit fundraising, with a focus on individual philanthropy and major gifts, including engagement with high-net-worth donors.
  • Bachelor’s degree in writing, communications, marketing, a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated success with identifying, applying for, and reporting on private, state, and federal grants.
  • Organizational and/or project management skills including: collecting and analyzing data; and fostering positive relationships with a wide variety of people, programs, and partners.
  • Self-starter with a positive attitude and ability to adapt quickly to changing needs
  • Knowledge of the outdoor recreation industry
  • Experience with, or the ability to quickly learn the following platforms: SalesForce, Google Suite (gmail, docs, sheets, forms, etc…), Windfall, Adobe Creative Cloud, Stripe, and Zoom

 

Benefits

  • Competitive salary: $70,000 – $75,000 depending on experience
  • 32-hour work week
  • 401k contributions (10% of salary) and home office reimbursements
  • Three weeks paid time off (increases to four weeks after one year of employment and five weeks after five years)
  • 10 paid holidays per year (alternatively, these can be added to your PTO)
  • 16 weeks family leave (four weeks paid, 12 weeks unpaid)
  • Eligibility for six-week sabbatical leave every five years

FOREST Program Leader

The FOREST Program mission is to inspire future environmental stewards and ambassadors by providing equitable and accessible opportunities for all people to connect with the outdoors. These programs provide educational and recreational experiences for deserving communities that are identified through strategic partnerships.

The Position

The FOREST Program Leader is a per diem position scheduled on an as needed basis. Program Leaders will work with diverse groups of participants from various types of organizations. Programs range from a single day, to a multi-day program that typically includes overnight programming.

We are seeking a dynamic individual who is passionate about working with groups outdoors in recreational and educational settings. Program Leaders will work closely with the FOREST Program Director to plan, implement, and report FOREST Programs. Program Leaders should possess:

  • A desire to lead, motivate, and manage groups of varying ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Experience leading groups in education, outdoor education, environmental or other related programming.
  • Excellent communication & leadership skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in outdoor recreational activities such as; hiking, camping, mountain biking, etc.
  • Proficient backcountry travel and outdoor skills, ability to perform in a variety of conditions.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop and lead outdoor educational and recreational programming.
  • Work with Partner Organizations and the FOREST Director to design and implement program itineraries and activities based on the needs and goals of the participant group.
  • Ability to work within a budget to plan, purchase, and manage food for the duration of the program.
  • Be familiar with and operate within the VHT FOREST Program Leader Field Manual.
  • Ensure all relevant paperwork is completed in their entirety and in a timely manner.
  • Manage and maintain outdoor education equipment & supplies.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative learning environment that promotes inter- and intra-personal development.
  • Promote environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
  • Monitor and ensure safety and well–being of all participants.
  • Provide first aid and emergency/incident response when required.

 

Location

In-person field programming may occur throughout the state of Vermont at VHT owned or managed venues, at partner organizations, or municipal, state, and federal lands. Administrative work may be completed remotely, however welcome to work in the VHT office in Waterbury, VT.

 

Minimum Experience

  • At least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Appropriate physical condition, must be able to self-manage while managing the group in austere environments.
  • A reliable form of transportation to get yourself and necessary program equipment to the program site.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to Leave No Trace principles.
  • Ability to monitor environmental conditions and hazards before and during the program.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification

 

Preferred Experience

  • Associates or Bachelors Degree in Outdoor Education, Education, Environmental Science or other related field.
  • Wilderness First Aid, First Responder, or WEMT Training & Certification
  • Adventure Sport Specific Instructor Level Credentialing

 

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive Compensation: $350/Day
  • Travel Reimbursement to and from Program Venue at Federal mileage reimbursement rate.
  • Program Food Reimbursement up to 100% of the budget or otherwise approved by the FOREST Program Director.

Carpenter/Maintenance Technician (Seasonal)

The Position

We are seeking a skilled and dependable Carpenter / Maintenance Technician to support the Huts Project Manager in the upkeep, repair, and improvement of our existing buildings, as well as the construction of a new hut for the upcoming 2026 season. The ideal candidate brings hands-on carpentry experience alongside broad general maintenance capabilities. The ability to work independently is a must.

This position requires travel within the state and overnight projects in backcountry locations. 

This is a new role that reports to the Huts Project Manager and may be asked to assist the Trails Project Manager on occasion.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Two years of carpentry experience
  • 18 years or older
  • Possessing a valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
  • Knowledge of carpentry techniques including framing, finish carpentry, and structural repairs
  • Experience with building materials, fasteners, and construction methods
  • Proficiency in the safe use of hand tools and power tools
  • Ability to read basic design plans and drawings
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must be willing to camp on site during new hut construction

 

Desired Experience

  • Knowledge of Solar electrical systems
  • Experience with power equipment and machines (UTVs, chainsaws, etc…)
  • Trail building and design experience

 

Location

Our main office is located in Waterbury, VT, but our projects are located all over the state.

 

Term

This seasonal position will begin as soon as possible and is anticipated to complete in November, 2026, with potential for year-round employment for the right candidate.

 

Compensation

$25 – $31 per hour based on experience.
